Mijin: I heard that using a cell phone and similar devices on an airplane can make it crash. Is that true?
Peter: There is no scientific data available that suggests that an electronic device could make an aircraft crash. The worst that may be possible would be some minor instrument errors or radio communication problems.
Mijin: So why do they tell us not to use electronic devices on airplanes?
Peter: It is more of a safety concern during takeoffs and landings. If the pilot has to make a sudden turn, you don`t want your laptop flying across the cabin and killing a poor stewardess.
Mijin: That is true.
미진: 비행기에서 휴대전화와 같은 기기를 사용하면 비행기가 추락한다고 들었어. 정말이니?
피터: 전자 기기가 비행기 추락을 일으킬 수 있다는 과학적 데이터는 없어. 일어날 수 있는 최악의 상황은 소소한 기기 고장이나 무선 통신 장애 정도야.
미진: 그러면 왜 비행기에서 전자 기기를 사용하지 말라고 하는 거야?
피터: 그건 이착륙 시 안전을 위한 것이 더 커. 조종사가 갑자기 방향을 틀게 될 때 뭣 모르는 승무원이 날아온 노트북에 맞아 죽으면 안 되잖아.
미진: 그건 맞는 말이다.
