Susan: Chan, what do you think of the American who hacked Microsoft’s WebTV service getting six months in prison?
Chan: I think it’s a little steep. Hacking is serious in itself, but the exact nature of his offence was not.
Susan: The attachment he sent to WebTV’s consumers reprogrammed their computers to dial 9-1-1. I guess crews were dispatched nationwide to places with no emergencies.
Chan: I still don’t think it warrants six months in prison, then six months home detention, PLUS paying a fine to Microsoft.
Susan: I think making him pay over $30,000 to Microsoft is not necessary. But I’m sure the legal system wants to set an example to dissuade hacking.

수잔: 3만 달러가 넘는 벌금을 MS에 지불하게 하는 건 불필요한 거라고 보긴 해. 하지만, 법 체제에서 이번 사건을 해킹을 저지하기 위한 본보기로 삼으려는 건 분명한 것 같아.
