구글, 위성지도 무료 제공
About six months ago, Google Inc. bought a digital map-making company called Keyhole.Corp. Since then, Google has been offering a paid version of Keyhole’s software, which allows users to zoom in to the map so closely they can see the addresses of buildings and personal residences.
Now Google is offering this satellite map service free of charge, which industry analysts say will raise the competition most dramatically for Mapquest-the longest-running site containing maps and directions.
There’s also the question of privacy, whether the satellite imaging may infringe on the privacy people expect from their own properties. But Google says the feature is meant to provide users with the opportunity to assess a neighborhood they’re thinking of moving to, or a vacation spot.

이제 구글은 위성지도 서비스를 무료로 제공할 것이며, 업계 분석가들은 이 서비스가 지도 및 위치 서비스를 제공하는 사이트중 가장 오래된 맵퀘스트의 가장 큰 경쟁자로 떠오를 것이라고 예측했다.
한편 여기에는 프라이버시에 관한 문제도 있는데, 위성 이미지 작업으로 사람들이 그들의 소유지에서 누리고자 하는 사생활을 침해할 수도 있다는 것이다. 그러나 구글측에서는 이 기능이 사용자들에게 그들이 이사할 계획인 지역이나 휴가를 보낼 곳 등을 알아볼 수 있는 기회를 제공하기 위한 것이라고 밝혔다.
