The race is on to develop the ultimate handheld device:One that combines a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant as well as a unit with e-mail capabilities; all in a functional, attractive package.
Right now, Handspring’s forthcoming Treo handheld, which combines a phone, a PDA based on the Palm operating system and a tiny keyboard, has a lot of buzz. Treo is hitting the market next year. GSM is the standard for wireless phone networks in Europe. And while there are some wireless service providers in the U.S. who use GSM technology, such as Voicestream and Cingular Wireless, the predominant type of wireless phone network in the U.S. is CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access). CDMA is used by providers like Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS. Those who already have accounts with CDMA providers would have to switch in order to use the Treo.
