I still have the scratch marks!
Mom: We definitely should clean up our lawn today.
Jenny: Ahh…. What time? I was thinking of watching some TV….
Mom: I`d like to finish it this morning.
Jenny: It would take at least 3 hours to rake up all those leaves…
Mom: But when we do it together, it will take less time.
Jenny: That`s true. I hope I don`t get any mosquito bites like last time. I still have the scratch marks from last year!
Mom: 오늘은 꼭 마당 청소를 해야겠는걸.
Jenny: 아. 몇 시쯤에요? 난 오늘 TV좀 보려고 했는데.
Mom: 오전 중으로 끝내고 싶구나.
Jenny: 저 낙엽들을 다 긁어 모으려면 적어도 3시간은 걸릴텐데.
Mom: 하지만 같이 하면 더 빨리 끝낼 수 있을 꺼야.
Jenny: 맞아요. 작년처럼 모기에 물리지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 그때 긁어서 난 상처가 아직도
남아 있거든요!
Rake up the leaves는 ‘낙엽을 갈퀴 등으로 긁어 모으다’라는 뜻의 표현입니다. 이와는 다른 의미로 ‘몸의 가려운 데를 긁다’ ‘할퀴다’라고 할 때는 ‘scratch’ 동사를 써야 합니다. 또한 낙엽의 복수형은 leafs가 아닌 leaves로 써야 하는 것 유의하세요!
Rake: (갈퀴 등으로) 긁다, 긁어 모으다
Scratch: (가려운 데를) 긁다, 할퀴다
