After last November’s cheating fiasco on the college entrance exam during which hundreds of students were caught using their cell phones to exchange answers, institutions in Korea started working on ways to detect cell phone use.
Professor Kim Ihn-seok of Kyung Hee University says he’s developed technology that can detect somebody using a mobile phone. By identifying fixed cell phone frequencies, the gadget can pick up on usage within a radius of five meters.
Kim says commercial products equipped with the technology are being developed and should be available in March, in plenty of time for this year’s college entrance exam.
The technology can naturally be applied to other fields too, such as IT firms and businesses under the threat of espionage.

김인석 경희대 교수는 누군가 휴대폰을 사용하고 있을 경우 이를 탐지해 낼 수 있는 기술을 개발해냈다고 밝혔다. 이 장치는 휴대폰의 고정 주파수를 파악해냄으로써 반경 5미터 내에서의 휴대폰 사용을 감지해 낼 수 있다.
김 교수는 이 기술을 장착한 상용제품이 현재 개발 중이며, 올해 대학입학 시험 전까지 충분한 시간적 여유가 있는 올 3월 중에는 선보일 수 있게 될 것이라고 전했다.
이 기술은 이외에도 IT 업체나 정보 유출의 위험에 놓여있는 사업과 같은 다른 분야에서도 응용될 수 있을 것이다.
