Publicized as a step in encouraging innovation in the technology software industry, computer giant IBM is set to release 500 of its patents into the open market. The patents are software technologies dealing with storage management, image processing, networking, and e-commerce. The release of these patents allows anyone to use the technology without paying for a license from IBM, which the company says should invite collaboration to adapt and improve the programs.
This is also known as ‘open source’ software, a principle that non-commercial Linux, supported by IBM, has abided by since its inception.
Critics of IBM point out that the 500 patents constitute only one percent of the software the company owns. IBM has received 25, 772 patents in the last 12 years, more than any other company.
