Jenny: I am very upset with Fred.
James: What seems to be the problem?
Jenny: Well, he never meets our deadlines. He just doesn’t seem to care about getting things done on time. Whenever I ask him why he didn’t get something done, he just gives me the runaround.
James: He doesn’t sound very professional. So, why don’t you fire him?
Jenny: The thing is he works as a freelancer. Plus, it’s not easy to find someone who is as good a writer as he is.
James: Well, it sounds to me as if he’s taking advantage of the vulnerable position your department is in.
Jenny: Fred한테 너무 화가 나.
James: 문제가 뭔데?
Jenny: 그는 마감 기한을 절대 지키지 않아. 문자 그대로 마감 기한에 대해서 신경을 안 쓰지. 내가 왜 일 마감이 늦냐고 물을 때마다, 그는 적당히 둘러대기만 하지.
James: 프로같지 않구나. 아직도 너희 부서에서 계속 일하게 하고 싶어?
Jenny: 글쎄, 문제는 그는 프리랜서로 일한다는 거야. 게다가 그처럼 글을 잘쓰는 사람을 찾기가 쉽지 않아.
James: 그가 너네 부서의 취약점을 이용하는 것 같구나.
‘runaround’는 ‘핑계, 발뺌, 속임수’를 뜻한다. ‘give someone the runaround’는 ‘∼에게 핑계를 대다, 적당히 둘러대다’라는 숙어다.
