Repor t: Intel to invest in Indian Wi-Fi firms
인텔, 인도의 와이파이에 투자하기로
As part of broader plans for the wireless internet market, Intel Corp. of Santa Clara plans to invest up to $3million each in six companies based in India which are developing Wi-Fi technology, according to a Thursday report in the Business Standard, a New Dehli newspaper.
Intel Capital recently joined with AT&T, IBM Global Services and investment firms Apax Partners Inc. and 3i to form a new company to offer wireless access to the internet. The new company, Cometa Networks, will offer broadband access at wholesale rates to telecommunications companies, internet service providers, cable operators and wireless companies. These will in turn offer wireless internet to their own customers, using Wi-Fi technology, also known as the 802.11 standard.
Although the report did not name the Indian companies Intel is considering for investment, it quoted an Intel official as saying, “We are in the process of identifying these companies”.
The investment in India is part of Intel’s $150million fund for investments into companies developing Wi-Fi technology. Intel has already invested around $100million in over 30 companies in India during the last four years, according to the Business Standard.

인텔캐피털은 최근 AT&T·IBM의 국제 서비스 및 투자회사 아팩스파트너, 3i와 함께 인터넷 무선접속서비스 제공을 위한 새로운 회사를 설립하기로 했다. 새로운 회사인 커메타네트웍스는 무선통신사, 인터넷서비스 공급회사, 케이블 및 무선회사에 도매수준으로 광대역 접속을 제공할 계획이다. 이런 회사들은 역시 802.11 스탠더드라고 알려진 와이파이 기술을 이용해 자신들의 고객에게 무선인터넷서비스를 제공하게 될 것이다.
이 보도는 인텔이 투자를 고려하고 있는 인도 회사들의 이름을 거론하지는 않았지만 “우리는 투자할 회사들을 구체화하는 작업을 진행중”이라고 말한 인텔 관계자의 말을 인용했다.
인도에 대한 투자는 와이파이 기술을 개발하는 회사들에 대한 인텔의 1억5000만달러 투자기금의 일부다. 인텔은 이미 지난 4년 동안 인도의 30개 회사에 1억달러를 투자했다고 비즈니스스탠더드는 보도했다.
