인터넷, 개도국에 새로운 사업 기회 열어줘
The U.N. report shows the Internet is opening new business opportunities in developing countries.
Kenya’s farmers use the Internet to sell coffee beans in Japan, and India is becoming a powerhouse as a call center for U.S. companies. Last year, the U.N. report finds, 32 percent of the world’s nearly 600 million Internet users were in developing countries. And that number could grow to 50 percent by 2008.
UNCTAD deputy Secretary-General Carlos Fortin says great benefits can accrue to poor countries that become part of the information society. “The message is, information and communication technologies can be a major adjunct to developing policy and a major instrument for development. This is an area of great interest to developing countries, and confirms that we should make an effort to identify ways in which we can help developing countries improve their access and their presence in the field of information and communications technologies.”
한 유엔 보고서에 따르면 인터넷이 개발도상국가에 새로운 사업의 기회를 열어주고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
케냐의 농부들은 인터넷을 사용해 커피콩을 일본에 판매하고 있으며, 인도는 미국 회사들을 위한 콜센터로 힘을 키우고 있다. 유엔 보고서에서 따르면 지난해 6억명에 달하는 전세계의 인터넷 사용 인구중 32%를 개발도상국의 사용자가 차지했다고 한다. 그리고 그 수치는 2008년이 되면 50%까지 증가할 수 있다고 한다.
카를로스 포르틴 유엔무역개발협의회(UNCTAD) 부총장은 빈곤한 국가들이 정보사회의 대열에 끼게 되면 이를 통해 많은 이익을 볼 수 있을 것이라고 말한다. “여기서 말하고자 하는 바는 정보통신 기술이 개발정책에 있어 주요한 보조수단이 될 뿐만 아니라, 개발을 위한 주요 수단이 될 수 있다는 것입니다. 이는 개발도상국가에게는 매우 중요한 부분이며, 우리가 개발도상국의 정보통신기술 분야 이용 가능성과 이 분야에서의 그들의 입지를 향상시켜줄 수 있도록 도울 수 있는 방법들을 모색하기 위해 노력해야 한다는 것을 확실히 해주는 것입니다.”
