A built-in MP3 player is rumored to be the latest enticement to customers shopping for a new mobile phone in Korea. At least it will be a function on a few of the 150 handset models scheduled to debut on the market this year. The camera phone, which comprised 46 percent of the market last year, is forecast to make up 80 percent in 2004.
Mobile handset makers Samsung Electronics Co., LG Electronics Inc., Pantech & Curitel, Telson Electronics, and Sewon Telecom are all reported to be introducing an increase in new models this year. Besides the lure of the MP3 option, camera phones will be available with an increased pixel resolution, up from 300,000 pixels on last year’s mainstream model to 2 million and higher this year.
한국에서는 새로 휴대폰을 장만하려는 소비자들을 끌어들이기 위해 최신 사양으로 MP3 플레이어가 내장된 휴대폰이 선보일 예정이라고 한다. 적어도 올해 시장에 새로 선보일 150여종의 휴대폰 중 일부에는 MP3 플레이어 기능이 장착될 것이다. 한편 작년에 시장 점유율이 46%였던 카메라폰의 경우, 2004년에는 점유율이 80%에 이를 것으로 예상된다.
휴대전화 생산업체인 삼성전자, LG전자, 팬텍&큐리텔, 텔슨, 세원텔레콤 모두 올해 신기종 모델 수를 더 늘일 것이라고 밝혔다. 휴대폰에 MP3 사양이 주는 매력이 추가된 것 외에 카메라폰은 작년에 주를 이루었던 30만 화소수 기종에서 올해는 화소수가 2백만, 또는 그 보다 더 늘어난 모델이 선보이게 된다.
