Printed works, from literature to musical scores, will be available online in about six years, compliments of Google. In cooperation with famous libraries such as Oxford, Harvard, and Stanford, Google will finance the digitized library, offering some 15 million books online for free.
For now, Oxford’s Bodleian library will make available 1.5 million of its eight million books, a collection of fiction, art and political writings. Eventually they plan to digitize most of the library, with the exception of the books that are too fragile to be scanned.
Librarians are saying that within two decades the world’s written information will available online, likening the innovation to Johann Gutenberg’s printing press in the 1450s, which revolutionized the speed and process of printing and distributing books.
구글 덕분에 문학에서 악보에 이르는 인쇄된 작품들이 약 6년 후면 온라인 상에서 선보이게 될 것으로 보인다. 옥스포드, 하버드, 스탠포드와 같은 유명 도서관들과 협력하여 구글은 약 1500만권의 책을 온라인 상에서 무료로 공급하게 될 디지털 도서관에 투자할 예정이다.
우선 옥스퍼드의 보들레이안 도서관이 800만권의 소장도서 중 150만권의 소설, 예술, 정치 저술들을 제공할 예정이다. 이들은 파손의 우려가 있어 스캔하기 힘든 것을 제외하고는, 궁극적으로 도서관에 있는 서적 대부분을 디지털화할 계획이다.
사서들은 20여년 후면 세계의 문서화된 정보들이 온라인 상으로 사용 가능하게 될 것이라고 말하면서, 이를 사서들은 책의 인쇄, 보급 과정과 속도에 혁명을 불러왔던 1450년대 요한 구텐베르크의 인쇄술 발명에 견주었다.
